Block Editor Basics

1 min read

WordPress uses the Block Editor, sometimes called Gutenberg, to create and edit the content on your website.

If you’ve used other website builders in the past, the Block Editor may look a little different at first. The good news is that the basic idea is simple: your page is made up of individual pieces called blocks.

Once you understand how blocks work, making everyday changes such as updating text, replacing an image, adding a button, or rearranging content becomes much easier.

What is a block? #

Almost everything you see on a page can be represented by a block.

For example:

  • A paragraph of text is a Paragraph block.
  • A heading is a Heading block.
  • A picture is an Image block.
  • A button is a Button block.
  • A group of content can be placed inside a Group block.
  • Multiple blocks can be arranged beside each other using Columns or a Row.

Think of blocks as the building pieces that make up your page.

Blocks can contain other blocks #

Some blocks are used primarily to organize other blocks.

For example, a section of your page might contain:

Group

  • Heading
  • Paragraph
  • Image
  • Buttons

The Group acts as a container holding the other blocks together. This makes it possible to move, style, or organize an entire section while still being able to edit each individual item inside it.

Don’t worry about Groups and other layout blocks just yet. We’ll cover those in detail later.
